Barcelona’s latest La Masia product, Elias Akhmash, could have ended up at Real Madrid, according to his agent.
The Spain Under-18 international was a surprise in Xavi’s first starting lineup in last week’s derby win over rivals Espanyol.
Akhomach joins a growing roster of Academy productions coming from the ranks with his 45-minute appearance against Vicente Moreno’s team for the first time ever.
However, despite Nico Gonzalez, Jaffe, Ansu Fati and Abdelsamad Zelzouli joining the first team, it could have been very different for the 17-year-old.
Akhmash controversially left the Barcelona academy, which was founded in 2013, but returned four years later.
“It didn’t make sense for Elias to be fired as a child, we all make mistakes in life,” his agent Horacio Gagioli said in an interview with SER Catalunya, reported via Diario AS.
I saw him playing at Gimnàstic de Manresa and I thought ‘How is that possible?
“Real Madrid wanted to take Elias, and other European teams were interested, but he chose to return to Barcelona because he loves the club.”
Akhomach is expected to play a role for Xavi in the coming weeks as the former midfielder prepares to bring more players from La Masia into his plans.
Fellow academic producer Azzouli replaced Akhmash in the first half against Espanyol and the pair are expected to feature again at Villarreal this weekend.
