Arsenal and Liverpool are on alert, with Real Madrid set to offload one of their many stars in the Champions League final in exchange for a transfer – possibly at a good price.
Marco Asensio, who scored against Juventus in the 2017 final in Cardiff, has only two years left on his contract with Los Blancos that he is keen to collect.
Previously promoted as a sly, Asensio has struggled for the past two years for consistency. Real is said to be keen to move forward with Vinicius Jr emerging as a key figure in the side.
While Asensio hasn’t lived up to his potential, he could still be a valuable asset to the Premier League side.
Arsenal are said to be interested and the North Londoners are said to have a good working relationship with Real, following the acquisitions of Martin Odegaard and Dani Ceballos, who spent two consecutive loan spells at the club under different managers. The Gunners may be keen to bolster their attack, given Arteta’s plans to incorporate Odegaard as a No. 8 rather than a No. 10.
Liverpool are also in contention for the attacking midfielder, with Jurgen Klopp looking to find depth in the Liverpool squad. With Thiago plagued with injuries since his arrival from Bayern Munich in 2020 and Harvey Elliott out for the foreseeable future, Asensio could provide momentum in the final third, either as a cap for a hat-trick against Klopp or in a 4-2-3-1.
Both sides face competition from Borussia Dortmund.
BVB has also attracted Real Madrid stars on loan in the past, notably Achraf Hakimi and Reinier. Asensio might suit the Bundesliga a little better than the pace and physicality of the Premier League, as he works into the No. 10 round of diamond formation Marco Rose.
Given that Asensio may not yet start with Arsenal or Liverpool, he might prefer a role in Germany instead. However, with the 25-year-old having room to become a fearsome striker, either team could go down and bring him in.
While Real Madrid may accept Asensio’s loan to keep its value high in January, it is best if he sells the Spanish club to raise funds.
