Alan Shearer names Southampton star alongside Ronaldo in his Premier League team of the week

Former Southampton and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has named Mohamed Salisu alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Reece James to his squad this week in the Premier League.

The centre-back, who joined Saints for £10.9m last summer, has proven to be the perfect replacement for Jannik Vestergaard and quickly rose through the ranks to become Ralph Hasenhuttl’s most exciting defender.

Still only 22-years-old, Salisu spent almost an entire season making his debut in Southampton’s colors before making his way into the team late last season with a string of eye-catching displays.

The Ghanaian then built on those performances over the summer as he established himself as a player under his Austrian coach.

Since then, Salisu has gone from strength to strength and on Saturday delivered one of his strongest showings yet as he kept Watford in an awkward position to help his side win three points at Vicarage Road.

His efforts for the Saints did not go unnoticed after he was named to Alan Shearer’s Premier League side of the week.

He was joined by big names such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane and England players Rhys James and Declan Rice.

Here’s Shearer’s entire team: Ramsdale (Arsenal); James (Chelsea), Varane (Manchester United), Salisu (Southampton), Gabriel (Arsenal), Mitchell (Crystal Palace); Rice (West Ham), Gallagher (Crystal Palace); Trossard (Brighton), Ronaldo (Manchester United), Cornet (Burnley).
